The Dallas Cowboys entered last season with a massive hole on defense after deciding that Micah Parsons’ contract demands were simply too rich for their blood. The Cowboys decided to move forward without the All-Pro pass rusher, and in my opinion, that proved to be a very bad decision.
For the first half of the season, the Dallas defense was a disaster. Before the trade deadline, the Cowboys were allowing 30.8 points, 397.4 total yards and 143 rushing yards per game. Simply put, they couldn’t stop a nosebleed.
That’s when Dallas decided it had seen enough.
At the trade deadline, the Cowboys acquired former Alabama standout and All-Pro defensive tackle Quinnen Williams from the New York Jets. Dallas paid a hefty price, sending New York a 2026 second-round pick, a 2027 first-round pick and defensive tackle Mazi Smith.
The impact was almost immediate.
Williams completely changed the Cowboys’ ability to defend the run. Over a three-game stretch following his arrival, Dallas allowed running backs just 117 rushing yards on 36 carries, the fewest in the NFL over that span. The defense as a whole began looking much more respectable after being one of the worst units in football during the first half of the season, points per game allowed dropped from 31 to 22 and total yards allowed dropped from 397.4 to 312.4
Now Dallas has made sure Williams isn’t going anywhere.
The Cowboys have agreed to a three-year, $105.9 million extension with Williams, including $101 million in total guarantees and $63.35 million fully guaranteed at signing. It’s a massive contract, but after seeing what Williams did for this defense last season, it’s one Dallas needed to make.
You don’t give up premium draft capital for an elite defensive tackle, watch him transform one of your biggest weaknesses, and then hesitate when it’s time to pay him. The Cowboys made their decision when they traded for Williams. This extension simply finishes the job.
With an extremely potent offense led by Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, combined with a much-improved defense anchored by Quinnen Williams, I believe the Cowboys have a legitimate shot to win the NFC East in 2026.
Quinnen Williams isn’t just part of the Cowboys’ defense—he’s one of the players they’re building it around. Congrats to the big man.
