Two-Time Super Bowl Champion and Super Bowl MVP Von Miller Joins the Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys are adding another big name to their defense, as veteran pass rusher Von Miller is expected to sign with Dallas. Miller announced the move on Instagram, bringing one of the most accomplished defensive players of his generation back home to Texas.

Miller may not be as young as he used to be, but on a much-improved Dallas defense, he can provide something that goes beyond sacks: veteran leadership and championship experience.

A Proven Winner

Von Miller’s résumé speaks for itself. He’s a two-time Super Bowl champion and the Super Bowl 50 MVP, a game in which his dominance helped Denver capture the championship.

He’s been around winning football. He’s played in massive postseason games, won championships with two different organizations and knows exactly what it takes when the pressure rises in January.

For a Dallas team trying to become a legitimate contender again, having someone with that experience in the locker room matters.

He Can Still Get After the Quarterback

Let’s be clear: Dallas isn’t signing the Von Miller who terrorized offenses during his prime in Denver.

But that doesn’t mean he’s finished.

Miller played for Washington last season and recorded nine sacks, leading the Commanders in that category. At this stage of his career, Dallas doesn’t need him to play every snap or carry the entire pass rush. They need him to become another weapon in the rotation and create problems when opposing offenses have to throw the football.

If you can add a veteran who can still produce nine sacks to a defensive front that already has talent, why wouldn’t you?

Dallas Has Been Building This Defense

The Cowboys have clearly made improving their defense a priority.

Dallas recently gave defensive tackle Quinnen Williams a three-year, $105.9 million extension after acquiring him last season. The Cowboys have also added considerable defensive depth this offseason, particularly in the secondary and defensive front.

Now add Von Miller to the mix.

He doesn’t have to be the superstar anymore. That’s what makes this fit interesting. Let the younger players handle the heavy workload and allow Miller to do what he still does best: hunt quarterbacks.

And when those younger defensive players need guidance, having a future Hall of Fame-caliber veteran who has already reached the top of the mountain isn’t a bad voice to have in the room.

What Does Von Miller Have Left?

That’s ultimately the question.

Miller is entering the final stages of an incredible career, and nobody should expect prime Von Miller to suddenly walk through the door in Dallas. But nine sacks last season showed that there is still something left in the tank.

For the Cowboys, this doesn’t need to be about finding another superstar.

It’s about adding another piece.

If Miller can provide situational pass rushing, veteran leadership and championship experience to an improving defense, this could be a very smart late-offseason addition.

The Cowboys have spent years trying to get back to the biggest stage in football.

Now they’re adding a man who already knows exactly what it takes to win there.
