The Houston Texans have been looking for someone to consistently play opposite Nico Collins ever since Stefon Diggs left for New England and Tank Dell suffered that brutal leg injury against the Chiefs in 2024. They appeared to have a potential answer in Jayden Higgins, but after Higgins suffered a torn ACL during a joint practice with the Raiders and was ruled out for the entire 2026 season, Houston suddenly had another major hole at wide receiver.
Higgins was expected to take on a much larger role this season after showing plenty of promise as a rookie. He finished 2025 with 41 receptions for 525 yards and six touchdowns, starting 10 games and becoming increasingly involved as the season progressed. There was plenty of reason to believe he could take another step in Year 2 and establish himself as Houston’s No. 2 option behind Collins. Instead, the Texans lost him before the season even began.
The Texans needed to respond, and they have done exactly that by trading for Kayshon Boutte from the New England Patriots. Houston is sending safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh round pick to New England in exchange for Boutte. Considering the situation Houston found itself in after losing Higgins, I think this is a smart move.
Boutte isn’t coming to Houston as some superstar receiver, but he doesn’t need to be one. Nico Collins is already the clear No. 1 option in this offense. What the Texans needed was another legitimate NFL receiver who could line up opposite Collins, stretch the field and give C.J. Stroud another reliable target. Boutte showed last season that he is capable of doing that.
In 2025, Boutte caught 33 passes for 551 yards and six touchdowns, averaging an impressive 16.7 yards per reception. That yards per catch number immediately stands out because it shows the type of element he can bring to Houston’s offense. Boutte can threaten defenses vertically, which should create opportunities not only for himself but also for Collins and the rest of the Texans offense.
Boutte has also developed considerably since entering the NFL as a sixth round pick in 2023. After barely playing as a rookie, he recorded career highs with 43 receptions and 589 receiving yards in 2024, followed by those six touchdowns last season. He’s still only 24 years old, so Houston isn’t acquiring a veteran at the end of his career. They’re getting a receiver who has already shown improvement and could potentially continue developing alongside Stroud.
And there’s already an interesting connection between Boutte and his new team. During last season’s playoffs, Boutte made a spectacular one handed touchdown catch against Houston. Now the Texans are bringing that same player into their own receiving room.
From New England’s perspective, the trade makes sense as well. The Patriots completely revamped their receiving corps this offseason by adding A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs, which meant Boutte was likely going to see a reduced role. Instead of keeping him buried further down the depth chart, New England gets a young defensive back in Reed and an additional draft pick while Boutte gets an opportunity for a much larger role in Houston.
But for Houston, this is about something bigger than replacing one injured receiver. The Texans already have a Super Bowl caliber defense. Now the offense needs to catch up. Houston has built a defense capable of keeping them in games against anybody, but if this team wants to go from being a playoff contender to actually reaching the Super Bowl, Stroud and the offense have to become more consistent.
That makes surrounding Stroud with enough weapons even more important. Collins is one of the best receivers in football, but Houston can’t expect him to carry the passing game by himself, especially after losing Higgins and with Dell’s future uncertain following his devastating injury. The Texans need multiple players who can threaten a defense, and Boutte gives them another legitimate option.
Houston has a team capable of competing deep into the playoffs, and when your defense is already playing at a championship level, you can’t allow a lack of offensive weapons to become the reason your season ends. Nobody should expect Boutte to walk into Houston and suddenly become an elite receiver, but that’s not what the Texans need from him.
They need him to take pressure off Collins. They need him to make plays downfield. They need him to give Stroud another player he can trust.
After losing Higgins, Houston could have simply hoped somebody already on the roster would step up. Instead, the Texans went out and found a proven young receiver who has produced at the NFL level and should immediately have an opportunity to become an important part of this offense.
Kayshon Boutte isn’t a flashy blockbuster addition, but he might be exactly the kind of move the Texans needed. The defense is ready to compete for a Super Bowl. Now it’s time for the offense to prove it can do the same.
