Lando Norris and McLaren are staying together.
McLaren announced that the reigning Formula 1 World Champion has signed a new contract that will keep him with the team until at least the end of 2030, with an option that could extend the partnership even further.
For both Norris and McLaren, I think this is fantastic news.
Norris has spent his entire Formula 1 career with McLaren. He joined the team’s development programme as a teenager, became a full time F1 driver in 2019 and stayed through years when winning races, never mind championships, seemed a long way away.
Now, that patience has paid off.
Norris helped McLaren return to the top of Formula 1 and became World Champion in 2025, delivering the team’s first Drivers’ Championship since Lewis Hamilton in 2008. McLaren also returned to the top of the Constructors’ Championship during his time with the team.
And now the partnership is set to continue for years to come.
Norris Stayed Through the Difficult Years
One of my favourite parts of the Norris and McLaren story is that he didn’t arrive once the finished product was sitting there waiting for him.
Norris made his Formula 1 debut in 2019 while McLaren was still rebuilding its way toward the front of the grid. He experienced the gradual climb from midfield contender, to podium challenger, to race winner and eventually World Champion.
There were plenty of moments when Norris could have looked elsewhere for his opportunity.
Instead, he stayed.
McLaren rewarded that faith by eventually giving him machinery capable of fighting for championships, and Norris rewarded McLaren by delivering a Drivers’ Championship.
That history makes this extension feel like more than simply another contract.
Why Would Either Side Want to Change?
McLaren has one of the best drivers in Formula 1 committed to the team for the long term.
Norris has a team capable of giving him a championship winning car.
Sometimes the obvious decision is the correct one.
There is always speculation in Formula 1 about which driver could move where, especially when someone of Norris’ calibre approaches a contract decision. But when a partnership is already producing championships, there isn’t much reason to break it apart.
Norris knows the team.
McLaren knows Norris.
And together, they have already reached the top of Formula 1.
A Chance to Build an Incredible McLaren Legacy
McLaren has one of the richest driver histories in Formula 1.
Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Niki Lauda, Mika Häkkinen and Lewis Hamilton are among the champions who have driven for the team.
Norris now has the opportunity to continue adding his own name to that history.
He already holds the record for the most Grand Prix starts for McLaren and has accumulated victories, pole positions, podiums and, most importantly, a World Championship with the team.
With his future secured through at least 2030, those numbers should continue climbing.
By the time this contract is finished, Norris could have spent well over a decade racing for the same Formula 1 team, something increasingly rare in modern sports.
McLaren Is Home
There are certain driver and team combinations that eventually become difficult to separate.
For this generation of Formula 1, Lando Norris and McLaren are becoming one of them.
McLaren gave Norris his Formula 1 opportunity.
Norris stayed through the difficult years.
Together, they climbed back to the front and eventually won a World Championship.
Now they get several more years to see just how much they can accomplish together.
For McLaren, keeping its World Champion was an easy decision.
For Norris, staying with the team he calls home makes just as much sense.
And for Formula 1 fans, we now get to watch the next chapter of a partnership that has already produced one of the best comeback stories in modern F1.
