When you think about the greatest point guards in NBA history, flashy scoring and highlight-reel plays usually come to mind. John Stockton was different. He did not need to dominate the headlines or put up 30 points every night. He simply ran an offense about as efficiently as anyone ever has.
And decades after his final NBA game, two numbers still tell you everything you need to know about his greatness.
15,806 assists.
3,265 steals.
Stockton remains the NBA’s all-time leader in both categories.
The Greatest Passer Ever?
Stockton spent his entire 19-year NBA career with the Utah Jazz and became one of the greatest floor generals basketball has ever seen.
He led the NBA in assists for nine consecutive seasons and finished his career with 15,806 assists, nearly 4,000 more than Jason Kidd, who retired second on the all-time list.
Stockton was not just an elite passer either. His 3,265 career steals remain the most in NBA history, showing just how much he could impact the game on both ends of the floor.
One Half of One of the Deadliest Pick-and-Roll Duos Ever
You cannot tell the story of John Stockton without Karl Malone.
Together, they formed one of the deadliest pick-and-roll duos in NBA history. Everyone knew what was coming, yet stopping it was another story entirely.
Stockton’s passing, timing and decision-making combined perfectly with Malone’s strength and finishing ability. If the defense committed to Stockton, he could find Malone rolling toward the basket. If they stayed with Malone, Stockton could attack or find another open teammate.
It became the foundation of Utah’s offense for nearly two decades and helped Stockton become the NBA’s all-time assists leader while Malone became one of the greatest scorers ever.
Sometimes basketball does not need to be complicated. The entire arena knew what Stockton and Malone were going to do, and teams still struggled to stop it.
A Career Built on Consistency
Stockton was also remarkably durable. He played all 82 games in 16 different seasons and retired having played 1,504 regular-season games, all with Utah.
He finished his career as a 10-time All-Star, 11-time All-NBA selection, five-time All-Defensive selection and member of both the NBA’s 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams.
The one thing missing was a championship.
Stockton and Malone reached consecutive NBA Finals in 1997 and 1998, but unfortunately for them, Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls were waiting both times.
Why John Stockton Is #5
The NBA’s all-time leader in assists. The NBA’s all-time leader in steals. One half of one of basketball’s greatest pick-and-roll combinations. Nineteen seasons of elite consistency and two trips to the NBA Finals.
There are four point guards I have ahead of him, but Stockton absolutely deserves his place among the five greatest to ever play the position.
John Stockton starts the list at #5.
Next up: #4 Isiah Thomas.
