The NFL is back in two days, so let’s see what every team’s goal should be going into this year. Some of these teams’ seasons are pretty much done the moment the ball kicks off because of how far away they are from actually competing, while others have legitimate Super Bowl expectations.
For some teams, it’s Super Bowl or bust. For others, making the playoffs would be a successful year. And for a few teams, winning might not even be the most important thing this season.
So let’s go through all 32 teams and decide what their real goal should be in 2026.
AFC East
Buffalo Bills — Get to the Super Bowl.
At some point, being one of the AFC’s best teams isn’t enough anymore. It’s time to break through.
Miami Dolphins — Get the #1 pick.
Sometimes the best goal is to accept where you are and put yourself in position to land the best player in the draft.
New England Patriots — Prove last season wasn’t a fluke.
You just reached the Super Bowl. Now show everyone that New England has genuinely returned as an AFC contender.
New York Jets — Give the fanbase something to believe in.
The Jets don’t need to become champions overnight, but another season without meaningful progress isn’t acceptable.
AFC North
Baltimore Ravens — Win the AFC.
The roster has been good enough for years. The quarterback is good enough. Eventually, Baltimore has to turn all of that into a Super Bowl appearance.
Cincinnati Bengals — Get back into the playoffs.
When you have Joe Burrow, missing January football should never become normal.
Cleveland Browns — Figure out the quarterback position.
Nothing else matters nearly as much until Cleveland knows who is supposed to lead this franchise.
Pittsburgh Steelers — Find a path beyond being competitive.
Being respectable every season is impressive, but Pittsburgh needs to start building toward actually becoming dangerous in January again.
AFC South
Houston Texans — Get the offense to catch up to the defense.
The defense is already good enough to win a Super Bowl. Now the offense needs to become respectable again, and that starts with C.J. Stroud getting back to looking like the quarterback we saw during his rookie season. If that happens, Houston has everything it needs to become a serious contender.
Indianapolis Colts — Find out what you actually have.
Indianapolis needs answers at the most important positions on the roster so this franchise can finally stop living in uncertainty.
Jacksonville Jaguars — Take the next step.
You won the division last season, so now it’s about proving that wasn’t the ceiling. Repeat as AFC South champions and win a playoff game. That’s the next step for this team.
Tennessee Titans — Develop the future.
Wins are great, but 2026 should primarily be about determining which young players belong on the next good Titans team.
AFC West
Denver Broncos — Reach the Super Bowl.
After going 14–3 last season, merely making the playoffs isn’t enough anymore. Denver should be thinking much bigger.
Kansas City Chiefs — Prove the dynasty isn’t finished.
A 6–11 season is unacceptable by the standard Kansas City created for itself. Get healthy, get back into January and remind everyone who you are.
Las Vegas Raiders — Find out if you have your future quarterback.
Kirk Cousins can start now, but eventually the season needs to tell Las Vegas whether Fernando Mendoza can become the guy.
Los Angeles Chargers — Win in January.
Regular-season promise doesn’t mean much anymore. This team needs postseason results.
NFC East
Dallas Cowboys — Make a real playoff run.
Nobody needs another good regular season followed by disappointment. Dallas needs January wins.
New York Giants — Keep Jaxson Dart healthy.
With John Harbaugh taking over as head coach, the Giants are entering a new era. The most important thing is keeping Dart healthy, developing him and giving Harbaugh a real foundation to build around.
Philadelphia Eagles — Get back to championship contention.
The standard in Philadelphia is too high for anything else.
Washington Commanders — Stay healthy and get Jayden Daniels back to his rookie-season form.
Washington saw how special this team could be during Daniels’ rookie year. Keep him healthy, get that version of him back and put the Commanders right back into the NFC conversation.
NFC North
Chicago Bears — Take the next step and become contenders.
Chicago won a playoff game last season, so simply getting back to January isn’t enough. Now it’s time to take another step and establish themselves as legitimate NFC contenders.
Detroit Lions — Win the NFC North.
This roster is too talented for moral victories. Detroit should expect to win one of football’s toughest divisions.
Green Bay Packers — Become a serious NFC threat.
Green Bay shouldn’t merely be happy to get into the playoffs. The goal should be becoming a team nobody wants to see once they’re there.
Minnesota Vikings — Establish what the next era looks like.
By the end of the year, Minnesota needs a clear picture of the team it is building for the next several seasons.
NFC South
Atlanta Falcons — Compete for the division.
The NFC South is there to be won. Atlanta needs to stop waiting for some future version of itself.
Carolina Panthers — Keep moving forward.
Nobody should demand a Super Bowl. Just make sure December’s Panthers are clearly better than September’s Panthers.
New Orleans Saints — Win the NFC South.
If New Orleans believes this roster is ready to compete, then prove it by taking the division.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers — Get back to January.
The standard should remain playoff football, not merely hanging around the race.
NFC West
Arizona Cardinals — Identify the core of the next contender.
Figure out who stays, who goes and which young players this franchise should actually build around.
Los Angeles Rams — Just win.
You have Aaron Donald and Myles Garrett, a top-three quarterback, a top-three wide receiver and a top-three head coach. There are no excuses with this roster. The goal is simple: win the Super Bowl.
San Francisco 49ers — Get back into the NFC title picture.
San Francisco has spent too many years close to the mountain top to settle for simply making the playoffs.
Seattle Seahawks — Repeat.
That’s it. You won the Super Bowl, and now everyone is coming for you. The only way to improve on last season is to do it again.
The Bottom Line
Success shouldn’t be measured the same way for every NFL team. If Seattle barely sneaks into the playoffs, that’s disappointing. If a rebuilding team finds its franchise quarterback and wins seven games, that could completely change its future.
One team needs a Lombardi Trophy. Another needs a quarterback. Another just needs proof that the plan is working.
The goal is different for everyone.
But by the end of the 2026 season, every team should be able to answer one question:
Did we accomplish what this season was supposed to accomplish?
