Thank you Jalen Duren, he’s took the damn money
Seriously.
Just one day after I wrote about the increasingly uncomfortable contract standoff between Duren and the Detroit Pistons, Duren decided to give me another article. This time, thankfully for Pistons fans, the news is much better.
Jalen Duren has agreed to a five-year contract with the Detroit Pistons, ending months of negotiations and keeping one of Detroit’s young stars in place for the long term.
The Standoff Is Finally Over
This situation had reached the point where a separation actually seemed possible.
Duren had missed media day and the beginning of training camp while he and the Pistons remained unable to agree on a new contract. Detroit had offered him a long-term deal, while Duren was eligible for a maximum contract. Reports also indicated that Duren felt disrespected by how negotiations had played out.
There was even a controversial weight clause discussed during negotiations. That clause was eventually removed from Detroit’s offer, but it added another layer to an already messy situation.
Thursday was decision day. Duren could accept Detroit’s long-term offer, take the qualifying offer and potentially become an unrestricted free agent next summer, or allow the qualifying offer to expire and continue negotiating with Detroit as a restricted free agent.
Instead, Duren and the Pistons finally got it done.
Detroit Keeps a Major Piece of Its Core
Whatever anyone thought about the negotiations, losing Duren would have been a major blow for Detroit.
Duren is only 22 years old and is coming off the best season of his career. He averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, earned his first All-Star selection and was named Third Team All-NBA.
Yes, his playoff performance left plenty to be desired. Duren’s production fell to 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in the postseason, which understandably gave Detroit something to think about before committing to him long term.
But we’re still talking about a 22-year-old All-Star center who has already established himself as a major part of what the Pistons are building.
Detroit didn’t need to start over at center. It needed to find a number that both sides could live with.
Apparently, they found it after all.
Now We Can Finally Talk About Basketball
This might be the best part.
No more contract deadlines. No more qualifying-offer speculation. No more wondering whether Duren will eventually be traded. No more wondering when he’ll report.
The Pistons can finally turn their attention back toward basketball.
Detroit has invested heavily in its young core, and Duren will now remain part of it for years to come. After months of uncertainty, that’s a major win for organizational stability.
And for Duren, it’s a long-term commitment from the team. That’s not a bad way to end a contract dispute.
So congratulations to Jalen Duren. Congratulations to the Pistons.
And most importantly…
Thank you, Jalen Duren, for waiting until the day after I wrote about your contract standoff to finally sign it.
