The Carolina Panthers picked up a statement win on Sunday Night Football, defeating the Detroit Lions 32–26 behind a huge performance from Tetairoa McMillan and an offense that consistently found answers against Detroit’s defense.
The Lions had one final opportunity to steal the game, getting the football back down six with around two minutes remaining. Carolina’s defense held firm, stopping Detroit on fourth down to seal the victory.
But the story of the night was McMillan. Detroit simply could not find an answer for him, as Bryce Young repeatedly went back to his top receiver in the biggest moments.
First Quarter: Carolina Responds
Detroit opened the scoring with a field goal, but Carolina responded with an impressive touchdown drive.
The Panthers moved efficiently down the field before Chuba Hubbard finished the possession with a 15-yard touchdown run, giving Carolina a 7–3 advantage.
It was an encouraging opening for the Panthers offense, which looked comfortable against Detroit from the start.
Second Quarter: McMillan Takes Over
Detroit added another field goal to make it 7–6, but Carolina quickly began leaning heavily on McMillan.
McMillan turned one reception into a big gain to move Carolina into Detroit territory and continued causing problems throughout the drive.
Then came his first touchdown.
Young found McMillan for a 32-yard score, extending Carolina’s lead to 13–6. The extra point hit the upright, keeping the margin at seven.
Detroit answered with a strong drive of its own. Sione Vaki made an important third-down catch and run, Jameson Williams helped move the Lions inside the Carolina 5-yard line, and a defensive holding penalty eventually put Detroit at the 1.
Jahmyr Gibbs finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown.
Carolina continued feeding McMillan on its next possession, including gains of 11 and 20 yards, but Detroit eventually held the Panthers to a field-goal attempt.
The Lions then generated one final scoring opportunity before halftime when Williams hauled in a massive 50-yard reception to put Detroit comfortably inside field-goal range.
Detroit converted the kick, sending the teams into halftime tied 16–16.
Third Quarter: McMillan Strikes Again
Carolina came out of halftime aggressively.
A big completion to Darren Waller helped the Panthers march into the red zone before Young went back to the player Detroit had struggled to contain all night.
McMillan ran an inside slant and hauled in his second touchdown of the game, putting Carolina back in front.
Once again, however, the Panthers failed to convert the extra point.
Detroit answered with another explosive play when Isaac TeSlaa hauled in a 60-yard reception, immediately wiping away the damage from a penalty and flipping the field.
Carolina’s defense responded by keeping the Lions out of the end zone and forcing another field-goal attempt.
Fourth Quarter: Hubbard Helps Carolina Finish It
With Carolina trying to create some separation, Hubbard delivered another huge play.
The Panthers running back broke loose for a long run and was finally stopped at the Detroit 2-yard line. Hubbard then finished the possession himself, punching it into the end zone for his second touchdown of the night.
Detroit refused to go away, keeping the game within one possession and eventually getting the football back down 32–26 with approximately two minutes remaining.
The Lions had an opportunity to produce a game-winning touchdown drive.
Carolina’s defense made sure it never happened.
Detroit eventually faced fourth down with its season-night comeback hopes hanging on one play. The Panthers got the stop, allowing Carolina to take possession and close out an impressive 32–26 victory.
Tetairoa McMillan Was the Difference
McMillan was the defining player of this game.
Whenever Carolina needed a big play, Young seemed to know exactly where to look.
McMillan consistently created separation, produced explosive gains and delivered twice in the end zone. Even late in the fourth quarter, with Carolina trying to protect its six-point lead, Young found McMillan for a huge 18-yard conversion on third down.
Detroit knew where the football was going and still struggled to stop it.
McMillan’s performance puts him firmly in the conversation for this week’s EST Excellence wide receiver rankings.
Final Thoughts
This was an impressive win for Carolina.
The Panthers offense moved the football effectively against a talented Detroit team, Young remained composed throughout the night, Hubbard delivered two touchdowns on the ground, and McMillan produced one of the best receiving performances of Week 4.
Detroit had plenty of explosive moments of its own. Williams and TeSlaa both produced huge receptions, while Gibbs found the end zone, but the Lions were forced to settle for field goals too often.
When Detroit finally got one last opportunity to win the game, Carolina’s defense delivered the decisive stop.
