Texans 34, Jaguars 31: Houston Wins London Thriller as Stroud and Lawrence Combine for Seven Touchdown Passes

Ethical Sports Takes | NFL Week 6 Recap

What a way to kick off NFL Sunday!

The Houston Texans defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 34-31 in an absolute thriller in London, securing their second consecutive victory after beginning the season 0-4.

This game had everything. Explosive passing plays, spectacular catches, costly mistakes, a 60-yard field goal, and a dramatic finish.

C.J. Stroud and Trevor Lawrence combined for seven touchdown passes, Jaylin Noel delivered his first career 100-yard receiving performance, and Travis Hunter made an impact on both sides of the football.

Houston ultimately escaped with the victory, but Jacksonville certainly didn’t make it easy.

First Quarter: Houston Strikes First

Both offenses struggled to get anything going early, opening the game with three-and-outs.

Jacksonville’s passing game looked particularly rough. Lawrence missed Parker Washington on third down, and the Jaguars subsequently failed to convert on fourth down.

Houston eventually found its rhythm.

Stroud connected with Nico Collins for a massive 40-yard completion, putting the Texans into the red zone. He finished the drive by finding Foster Moreau for a touchdown, giving Houston a 7-0 lead.

Jacksonville wasn’t finding much success through the air, but its rushing attack was doing the heavy lifting.

The Jaguars accumulated 55 rushing yards in the opening quarter and entered the second quarter threatening to score.

End of Q1: Texans 7, Jaguars 0.

Second Quarter: Lawrence Bounces Back

Jacksonville appeared to have its first touchdown when Bhayshul Tuten reached the end zone, but an offensive holding penalty wiped out the score.

Things got even worse when Lawrence threw an interception, ending a promising possession.

Fortunately for Jacksonville, Houston couldn’t capitalize on the turnover.

Lawrence continued struggling, completing just five of his first 14 passes with an interception.

But things eventually started clicking.

A 30-yard completion to Parker Washington on third down helped spark the offense. Lawrence followed that up by finding a wide-open Tuten for a 30-yard touchdown.

Houston responded with explosive plays of its own.

Jaylin Noel broke free for 35 yards, while newly acquired Marvin Harrison Jr. recorded a 15-yard reception.

The Texans eventually faced fourth-and-one in the red zone but elected to kick a field goal.

Personally, I thought that was far too conservative. Houston had an opportunity to keep the drive alive and potentially score seven points, but instead settled for three.

Jacksonville took advantage of excellent field position on its next possession.

Lawrence connected with Jakobi Meyers on third down before firing a 20-yard completion to Travis Hunter.

He then rolled to his right and found Tuten for his second touchdown of the afternoon, giving Jacksonville its first lead.

However, Houston wasn’t finished.

Stroud opened the following possession with a massive 50-yard completion to Noel. A pass interference penalty drawn by Collins gave the Texans the ball at the one-yard line.

Stroud then found Moreau for his second touchdown, with the tight end making a spectacular one-handed catch.

Halftime: Texans 17, Jaguars 14.

Third Quarter: Houston Takes Control

The Texans came out swinging to begin the second half.

Houston’s offense continued attacking Jacksonville’s secondary, and the Jaguars made matters worse with a costly 12-men-on-the-field penalty during a Texans punt.

Instead of getting the ball back, Jacksonville handed Houston another opportunity.

Stroud made them pay.

After another important completion to Harrison, Stroud connected with Noel for a 13-yard touchdown, extending Houston’s lead to 24-14.

It was Noel’s first career 100-yard receiving game, and he was quickly becoming one of the biggest problems for Jacksonville’s defense.

The Jaguars responded by finding the end zone, cutting the deficit to 24-21.

But Houston answered again.

Running back Jawhar Jordan broke free for a 25-yard rushing touchdown, his first NFL score, restoring the Texans’ 10-point advantage.

Jacksonville had plenty of work to do entering the final quarter.

End of Q3: Texans 31, Jaguars 21.

Fourth Quarter: Travis Hunter Takes Over

Trailing by 10 points, Jacksonville needed somebody to make a play.

Enter Travis Hunter.

Lawrence continued moving the Jaguars downfield before connecting with Hunter for a seven-yard touchdown with 11:26 remaining.

Suddenly, Houston’s lead was down to three points.

But Hunter wasn’t finished.

The Texans put together another promising possession, moving deep into Jacksonville territory behind contributions from Woody Marks and Collins.

With under four minutes remaining, Stroud attempted a play-action pass toward the end zone.

TRAVIS HUNTER INTERCEPTED IT!

It was Stroud’s first interception of the season, ending a streak of 209 pass attempts without throwing a pick.

Think about that for a second.

Hunter had already scored a touchdown on offense, and now he had delivered a massive interception on defense in the fourth quarter.

That’s exactly why Jacksonville values his ability to play both ways.

The Jaguars subsequently moved near midfield but couldn’t advance far enough to make things easy for their kicker.

Facing fourth down, Jacksonville sent out Cam Little for a 60-yard field goal attempt.

And he absolutely drilled it.

31-31 with 1:55 remaining.

After everything that had happened, we were tied again.

Houston got the ball back with an opportunity to win the game.

Stroud and the Texans moved into field goal range, and Houston ultimately secured the victory with a late field goal.

FINAL: Texans 34, Jaguars 31.

What an unbelievable finish to an entertaining game in London.

Key Takeaways

1. The Texans Are Finally Heading in the Right Direction

After starting the season 0-4, Houston has now won two consecutive games.

And this victory was particularly impressive.

Beating Tennessee was one thing. Defeating a Jacksonville team that entered the weekend 4-1 is another.

Stroud looked increasingly comfortable running the offense, Houston’s receivers repeatedly created explosive plays, and the Texans finally looked capable of consistently moving the football.

The addition of Harrison gives defenses another dangerous receiver to account for alongside Collins and Noel.

Houston still has plenty to work on defensively, particularly after surrendering 31 points, but the offense is showing serious signs of life.

Nobody should be declaring the Texans contenders just yet. Starting 0-4 creates a massive hole, and two victories don’t erase that.

But they’re finally moving in the right direction.

2. Jaylin Noel Is Becoming a Serious Weapon

What a performance from Jaylin Noel.

The young receiver finished with four receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown, recording his first career 100-yard receiving game.

His 35-yard gain in the first half helped Houston establish momentum, while his 50-yard reception before halftime immediately put Jacksonville’s defense under pressure.

He also found the end zone in the third quarter.

With Collins, Harrison, and Noel all capable of making explosive plays, Houston has the potential to develop one of the more dangerous receiving groups in the AFC.

And Noel is making a strong case for an increasingly important role in this offense.

3. Jacksonville’s Defense Has to Be Better

Let’s be clear about something.

You cannot consistently win football games when you’re giving up 34 points.

Jacksonville entered this matchup with a 4-1 record, but its defense struggled throughout the afternoon.

Stroud repeatedly found receivers downfield, with Noel and Collins producing explosive gains.

There were also costly mistakes, including the 12-men-on-the-field penalty that extended a Houston possession in the third quarter.

Jacksonville’s offense scored 31 points. That should be enough to win plenty of football games.

The Jaguars have legitimate talent on both sides of the ball, but their defense cannot continue giving opponents this many opportunities.

If Jacksonville wants to compete for the AFC South title, the defense needs to be much better.

4. Travis Hunter Shows Why He’s Special

How many players can make an impact on both sides of the football in the same NFL game?

Hunter did exactly that against Houston.

He caught a seven-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter and followed it up with a massive end-zone interception that gave Jacksonville an opportunity to tie the game.

And these weren’t meaningless plays in a blowout.

Both came in the fourth quarter of a game decided by three points.

Hunter is still developing as an NFL player, and there will undoubtedly be growing pains as he continues splitting his responsibilities between offense and defense.

But performances like this demonstrate why Jacksonville was willing to invest so heavily in his talent.

A touchdown and an interception in the same game. That’s special.

5. Trevor Lawrence Deserves Credit for His Response

Lawrence’s opening performance was ugly.

At one point, he had completed just five of 14 passes and thrown an interception.

Jacksonville’s passing offense looked completely out of sync, and Houston appeared to have the upper hand.

But Lawrence didn’t allow the poor start to define his afternoon.

He began connecting with Washington, found Tuten for two touchdowns, and continued making plays as Jacksonville battled back.

By the end of the game, Lawrence had thrown four touchdown passes and helped put 31 points on the scoreboard.

Was it a perfect performance? Absolutely not.

But quarterbacks are going to have difficult stretches, and what matters is how they respond.

Lawrence showed plenty of resilience.

Unfortunately for Jacksonville, his comeback wasn’t enough to secure the victory.

6. Houston’s Defense Still Has Work to Do

As impressive as Houston’s offensive performance was, the Texans cannot ignore what happened defensively.

Jacksonville scored 31 points, Lawrence threw four touchdowns, and the Jaguars repeatedly found ways to respond whenever Houston appeared to be taking control.

A 31-21 fourth-quarter advantage should have put the Texans in a comfortable position.

Instead, Jacksonville scored 10 unanswered points to tie the game.

Houston deserves credit for finding a way to win, but this defensive performance wasn’t exactly reassuring.

The Texans have plenty of offensive firepower, but they’ll need more consistency on defense if they want this winning streak to continue.

Final Thoughts

What a way to start NFL Sunday.

The Texans and Jaguars delivered one of the most entertaining games of the weekend, combining for 65 points and seven passing touchdowns.

Houston leaves London with consecutive victories and some much-needed momentum after a disastrous start to the season.

Stroud is looking increasingly comfortable, Noel is emerging as another dangerous receiving option, and the offense finally appears to be finding its identity.

For Jacksonville, there are positives despite the loss.

Lawrence responded well after a terrible start, Tuten scored twice, and Hunter delivered a remarkable two-way performance.

But the defense needs serious improvement.

Houston is heading in the right direction. Jacksonville has the talent to compete, but it needs to start playing better defense.

And for everyone watching from home?

That was one heck of a football game.
