The 2026–27 NBA season is underway, and with it comes the introduction of our newest weekly series: EST Excellence NBA.
Every Monday, we’ll recognize two players who delivered exceptional performances during the previous week: one from the Eastern Conference and one from the Western Conference.
Our selections aren’t determined solely by points scored. Efficiency, individual impact, the significance of the performance, and the circumstances surrounding it all matter.
For our inaugural edition, we’re recognizing two spectacular performances from opening week.
Eastern Conference Excellence — Paul George, Boston Celtics
October 20 vs. Detroit Pistons
Final Score: Detroit 121, Boston 113
| Statistic | Total |
|---|---|
| Points | 38 |
| Rebounds | 5 |
| Assists | 3 |
| Steals | 5 |
| Field Goals | 12/21 |
| Three-Pointers | 7/12 |
What a way to introduce yourself to a new fan base.
Paul George wasted absolutely no time making his presence felt in Boston, delivering one of the most impressive individual performances of opening night.
George erupted for 38 points against Detroit, setting a Celtics franchise record for the most points scored by a player in his debut.
Think about that for a second. How many legendary players have worn a Boston Celtics uniform? Larry Bird, Bill Russell, Kevin McHale, Kevin Garnett, and countless others have represented one of the most storied franchises in basketball history.
Yet Paul George, in his very first game wearing Celtics green, established a new franchise record for points scored in a debut.
That’s an incredible accomplishment when you consider the history of this organization.
He was remarkably efficient, shooting 57.1% from the field and connecting on seven of his twelve three-point attempts. He also contributed five steals, demonstrating that his impact extended well beyond scoring.
At one point, George appeared nearly unstoppable, knocking down three three-pointers in less than a minute during the third quarter as Boston built a 22-point lead.
Unfortunately for the Celtics, that advantage disappeared. Detroit mounted an impressive comeback and secured a 121-113 victory.
But we’re not going to overlook an outstanding individual performance simply because the team lost.
George was exceptional, and without his production, Boston wouldn’t have been in such a commanding position to begin with.
At this stage of his career, questions about how much George has left are understandable. His opening-night performance provided quite the response.
Our Verdict: A franchise-record debut, elite shooting efficiency, and five steals. Paul George earns our Eastern Conference EST Excellence award.
Western Conference Excellence — Anthony Edwards, Minnesota Timberwolves
October 21 vs. Miami Heat
Final Score: Minnesota 131, Miami 106
| Statistic | Total |
|---|---|
| Points | 45 |
| Rebounds | 10 |
| Assists | 3 |
| Steals | 2 |
| Field Goals | 16/29 |
| Three-Pointers | 9/17 |
Anthony Edwards didn’t just open the season with a statement. He delivered one of the most dominant performances of opening week.
Facing a Miami Heat team featuring Giannis Antetokounmpo in his debut, Edwards took complete control.
The Minnesota superstar poured in 45 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and buried nine three-pointers as the Timberwolves cruised to a 131-106 victory.
Miami simply had no answer.
Edwards attacked from all three levels, but his perimeter shooting was particularly devastating. He connected on nine of his 17 attempts from beyond the arc, repeatedly punishing Miami whenever the defense gave him space.
His performance also placed him in remarkable historical company.
With 45 points against Miami, Edwards became just the third player in NBA history to score at least 40 points in multiple season openers, joining Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain.
That’s extraordinary company for a player who continues to establish himself among the league’s elite.
What impressed us most wasn’t simply the scoring total. Edwards combined his offensive explosion with strong rebounding and helped Minnesota dominate a team with significant expectations entering the season.
The Timberwolves won by 25 points, and Edwards was the driving force behind that statement victory.
Our Verdict: Forty-five points, nine three-pointers, a double-double, and a place alongside Jordan and Chamberlain in the history books. Anthony Edwards earns our Western Conference EST Excellence award.
Final Thoughts
Both Paul George and Anthony Edwards made history during opening week, making our inaugural EST Excellence selections relatively easy.
George set a scoring record in his debut for one of the NBA’s most storied franchises, while Edwards joined Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain in the history books.
Anytime you put your name alongside some of basketball’s all-time greats or establish a new record for a franchise with as much history as the Boston Celtics, you know you’ve accomplished something special.
That’s exactly what both players did this week, and it’s why they’re our first EST Excellence NBA recipients.
