The Los Angeles Lakers bounced back from their first defeat of the season Wednesday night, defeating the Los Angeles Clippers 103-87 at Intuit Dome to improve to 4-1.
With Luka Dončić sidelined by back tightness, the Lakers needed their supporting cast to deliver. Quentin Grimes answered with 23 points, Collin Sexton added 21, and Los Angeles put together its strongest defensive performance of the young season.
The Clippers struggled to find any offensive consistency, committing 24 turnovers as the Lakers turned those mistakes into 31 points.
First Quarter: A Competitive Opening
The Lakers opened the game with a three-pointer from Matisse Thybulle, but neither team established much offensive rhythm early.
Derrick Jones Jr. provided an early spark for the Clippers, who put together a run to briefly take control. The Lakers struggled to generate consistent offense, allowing their crosstown rivals to move ahead.
However, Los Angeles responded late in the quarter, closing with a 9-2 run to regain the advantage.
The Lakers entered the second quarter leading 25-22, with the game still very much up for grabs.
Second Quarter: Lakers Take Complete Control
The second quarter changed everything.
Austin Reaves helped lead the Lakers’ offense, while Sexton and Sandro Mamukelashvili provided valuable contributions off the bench.
But the biggest difference was on the defensive end.
The Lakers repeatedly disrupted the Clippers’ possessions, forcing turnovers and making it extremely difficult for their opponents to find clean looks.
A 16-0 Lakers run helped blow the game open, with the Clippers managing just 16 points across the entire quarter.
The Lakers closed the first half on a dominant 27-7 run, turning a competitive contest into an 18-point advantage.
Halftime: Lakers 56, Clippers 38.
The Clippers shot just 17.6% during the second quarter, and their inability to protect the basketball made matters worse.
Third Quarter: Clippers Fight Back, Sexton Responds
The Clippers came out of halftime with more energy, opening the third quarter on an 8-0 run.
Derrick Jones Jr. knocked down a three, Darius Garland attacked the basket, and the Lakers committed several careless turnovers. Garland added three free throws after drawing a foul from Quentin Grimes, cutting the deficit to ten.
Walker Kessler finally stopped the run with a dunk, but the Clippers continued to apply pressure and briefly reduced the Lakers’ advantage to single digits.
That was as close as they would get.
Jake LaRavia, Thybulle, and Grimes helped the Lakers respond with a 10-0 run, restoring their comfortable advantage.
Then Collin Sexton took over offensively.
Sexton scored 11 consecutive Lakers points, giving his team the offensive production it needed to put the Clippers back on their heels.
The Clippers received a buzzer-beating basket from Keaton Wagler to finish the quarter, but the Lakers still carried an 85-66 lead into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter: Lakers Finish the Job
The Clippers opened the final quarter with a dunk from Baba Miller, but Grimes quickly answered with a layup and continued to contribute offensively.
With the Lakers holding a substantial lead, the Clippers attempted to chip away at the deficit. They put together a five-point run midway through the quarter, while the Lakers experienced a scoring drought lasting approximately four minutes.
However, the Clippers couldn’t generate enough offense to seriously threaten a comeback.
Grimes and Mamukelashvili eventually ended the Lakers’ drought with consecutive baskets, effectively removing any remaining doubt about the outcome.
The Lakers closed out a convincing 103-87 victory, holding the Clippers to just 21 fourth-quarter points.
Final Thoughts
This was exactly the response the Lakers needed after surrendering 136 points in their previous loss to Portland.
Without Dončić, the Lakers demonstrated that their supporting cast could win games through defense, energy, and balanced scoring.
Grimes led the way with 23 points, five assists, and four steals. Sexton contributed 21 points off the bench, including his outstanding third-quarter scoring stretch.
Reaves finished with 16 points, while Kessler added 11 points and nine rebounds. Thybulle also impressed with 15 points.
For the Clippers, Wagler provided a bright spot with 21 points, while Jones Jr. added 15 and Garland finished with 14.
But the Clippers’ offensive struggles were impossible to overlook. Shooting just 35.1% from the field and committing 24 turnovers is simply not a winning formula.
The Lakers weren’t perfect themselves, but their defensive intensity and ability to capitalize on mistakes made the difference.
Final Score: Los Angeles Lakers 103, Los Angeles Clippers 87
The Lakers improve to 4-1, while the Clippers fall to 1-3.
