EST Players of the Month — October 2026

The first month of the 2026–27 NBA season is in the books, and it’s time to hand out our inaugural monthly EST honors.

For October, we’re recognizing two players who have made their presence felt on both ends of the floor. One has helped Philadelphia race to a 6–1 start, while the other continues to show why he’s one of the most unique talents basketball has ever seen.

Here are our EST Players of the Month for October 2026.

Eastern Conference Player of the Month — Tyrese Maxey, Philadelphia 76ers

Team Record: 6–1

October Averages:

  • 29.6 points per game
  • 4.4 assists per game
  • 4.1 rebounds per game
  • 1.7 steals per game
  • 0.7 blocks per game
  • 48.6% field-goal shooting

Tyrese Maxey has been outstanding to begin the season, and he’s our clear choice for Eastern Conference Player of the Month.

Philadelphia has opened the year with six wins in seven games, and Maxey has been at the center of that success. He’s leading the team in scoring, averaging nearly 30 points per game while shooting an impressive 48.6% from the field.

His consistency has been remarkable. Maxey scored at least 26 points in all seven October appearances, including a season-high 38 points against Charlotte.

But what makes his month particularly impressive is how often he’s delivered when Philadelphia needed him most.

Maxey has repeatedly stepped up in tight games, taking responsibility offensively and producing important baskets down the stretch. Against Indiana on October 28, he scored 15 fourth-quarter points to help Philadelphia secure a 114–109 victory.

That ability is reflected in our proprietary EST Takeover Rate, where Maxey leads the way. The metric is designed to recognize players who take control of games when their teams need them most, rather than simply rewarding high scoring totals.

And Maxey’s contributions haven’t been limited to offense.

His defense has shown encouraging improvement. He’s averaging 1.7 steals and 0.7 blocks per game, while shooting efficiently on the other end.

According to 3Steps Basketball, Maxey ranks ahead of 92% of players in its mixed team-defense metric, with a defensive rating of 101.3. The metric considers both individual defense and team defensive performance.

For a player already known for his offensive abilities, those defensive contributions make his start even more impressive.

With Philadelphia sitting at 6–1, Maxey leading its scoring attack, his clutch performances and his improved defensive play, we don’t see a stronger candidate in the East.

Western Conference Player of the Month — Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio Spurs

Team Record: 4–2

October Averages:

  • 28.0 points per game
  • 10.7 rebounds per game
  • 3.0 assists per game
  • 4.2 blocks per game
  • 48.5% field-goal shooting

The Western Conference was a much tougher decision.

Luka Dončić made a compelling case with his remarkable scoring production for the Lakers. Averaging around 36 points per game is difficult to overlook, particularly when Los Angeles finished October with the same 4–2 record as San Antonio.

But our selection is Victor Wembanyama.

Wembanyama’s numbers have been extraordinary, particularly when you consider the impact he has on opposing offenses.

It’s not just about the shots he blocks. His presence around the basket forces opponents to rethink their decisions. Driving lanes become less inviting, shots get altered and teams have to account for him whenever they attack the paint.

And he’s hardly a one-dimensional defensive specialist.

Wembanyama scored 36 points and grabbed 14 rebounds against Utah, then followed that with a spectacular 43-point performance against Minnesota on October 31, adding six blocks in the Spurs’ 121–111 victory.

That final performance was an excellent way to close the month and strengthened his case for our award.

His offensive game continues to develop, but it’s his ability to influence both ends of the floor that separates him from much of the competition.

Luka deserves serious recognition for his scoring, and this was not an easy selection. But with the Lakers and Spurs posting identical records, we give Wembanyama the edge for his combination of scoring, rebounding and elite rim protection.

Final Thoughts

Our October selections represent two different forms of excellence.

Maxey has been Philadelphia’s offensive leader, delivering in important moments while showing meaningful improvement defensively.

Wembanyama has been a force on both ends, putting up impressive scoring numbers while remaining one of the NBA’s most intimidating defenders.

Both have earned their places as EST’s first Players of the Month for the 2026–27 season.
